We identify the panels, inverter and other equipment already installed and assess how storage can be integrated.
Battery retrofit
Add battery storage to an existing solar PV system.
If you already have solar panels, battery storage may allow more of the electricity generated during the day to be retained for use later. NS Booth assesses the existing solar installation, inverter, electrical infrastructure and household demand before recommending a retrofit approach.
Use more of your solar generation
Your existing solar system may have more to offer.
Homes without storage often export some surplus solar generation during periods when production exceeds household demand. A battery can potentially retain part of that surplus and make it available later in the day.
Existing solar performance and household demand help establish how much surplus energy may realistically be available.
Capacity and system architecture are selected around the existing installation rather than treating it as a new-build solar system.
Compatibility
Can any solar system have a battery added?
Many existing solar PV installations can be considered for battery storage, but the best approach depends on the equipment already installed, system age, inverter arrangement, electrical infrastructure and the battery technology being considered.
We inspect those details before recommending whether existing equipment should remain in place or whether other changes make sense.
A wider energy plan
Storage can do more than capture surplus solar.
Depending on the equipment and tariff, a battery may also support scheduled grid charging, helping the property shift some electricity consumption between lower and higher-cost periods.

Adding batteries to existing solar FAQs.
Can I add a battery to solar panels that are already installed?
Often, yes. The appropriate solution depends on the existing inverter, solar equipment, electrical installation and the battery system being considered.
Do my existing solar panels need replacing?
Not simply because battery storage is being added. The existing solar installation should first be assessed for condition, performance and compatibility with the proposed storage arrangement.
How do you decide what size battery to add?
We consider household electricity demand, existing solar generation, likely surplus generation, tariff strategy and the amount of stored energy that can realistically be used.
Can the battery also charge from the grid?
This depends on the battery system and configuration. Where supported, scheduled grid charging can form part of a wider time-of-use tariff strategy.
